All museums, large or small, have a backlog of out-standing tasks. As an external collections care consultant, I can be a powerful asset for any museum, where staff time, specialist knowledge or resources may be limited. I can undertake a variety of collections management services tailored to the individual institution that will be informed by best practice and current standards. Many of these, such as audits, cataloguing or condition checks, are a requirement to comply with museum accreditation or satisfy potential lenders.

I am available for a day, week or on a more regular basis to perform one-off assignments or carry out longer term projects. I will provide a report if needed and I can show volunteers and staff how to conduct these tasks to make your organisation more self-reliant.

This is a taste of what I offer, click on the buttons below to find out more, but I’m always happy to discuss your individual requirements.

  • By conducting a targeted collections audit you will get a clearer picture of the scope and condition of what your museum holds, highlighting priorities for action. I can also look at the whole museum operation and suggest areas for attention. This kind of assessment helps small teams make informed decisions and realistic plans for the future.
  • I can undertake cataloguing, to improve documentation, object tracking, and long‑term accountability. Accurate records mean collections are more accessible for research, interpretation, and community engagement, adding to their intrinsic value.
  • Preventative conservation, environmental monitoring and Integrated Pest Management offers strategies that reduce risks before they become costly problems. I will work with in-house teams and resources to design monitoring systems, train staff, and recommend practical, low‑cost storage interventions that protect collections from preventable damage.
  • During exhibitions I can offer design assistance or a practical pair of hands for installations. I will give simple tips and tricks to ensure displays are visually engaging without compromising the preservation of the object.
  • I can carry out research and deliver talks and tours, helping museums share specialist knowledge with visitors, volunteers, and local groups, strengthening community connections and enhancing public understanding of collections care.
